Acker Stadt Palast

Acker Stadt Palast in Berlin's Mitte district is a place where established artists and newcomers meet to experiment and reflect upon contemporary discourses. The focus of the venue, established in 2012, is on the connection between contemporary dance and new music. Acker Stadt Palast offers the independent performing arts community a novel interface between these art forms while also being interested in diverse aesthetic forms of dance and theater.
Acker Stadt Palast is the venue of the registered association Freie Bühne Mitte (Independent Theater Mitte). The members are theater makers, musicians, actors, theater technicians and academics working within the humanities who have been responsible for the schedule of programming and operation of Acker Stadt Palast since the summer of 2012. The theater's survival is ensured by an indefinite rental agreement with the residential and cultural project Schokoladen - a unique situation for a cultural project located in Mitte.
In 1990, artists squatted the former chocolate factory on Ackerstraße, where they opened a bar and theater. They organized concerts and readings and quickly gained a large, loyal audience. Between 1993 and 2013, there was a bitter fight with the building's new owner which was finally resolved in 2012 with the continuation of the project thanks to the support of the Berlin Senate and an exchange of property.

Allmende-Kontor: Festival-Dependance in Neukölln

The community garden Allmende-Kontor on Tempelhofer Feld was founded over the course of pioneer projects on the former airfield through an initiative of 13 community garden activists, researchers and friends of urban gardening and urban agriculture. The first 10 raised garden plots were created on an area of 5,000 square meters by some 20 participants on April 16, 2011. Since then, the garden and its community with more than 250 raised garden plots and over 600 co-gardeners have flourished – completely self-organized. The association Gemeinschaftsgarten Allmende-Kontor e.V. was founded on June 5, 2014.

The garden on the Neukölln side of Tempelhofer Feld has put down roots and in recent years has become a one-of-a-kind attraction in the city in the sense of education, networking and recreation. Allmende-Kontor has set itself the task of revitalizing the term “Allmende” (shared property, solidary action) and anchoring it within the topics of urban development, food sovereignty and interculturality.

Bootschafft

Bootschafft is a new theater in Pankow, located in the conference hall of the former Australian Embassy in East Berlin. Located at Grabbeallee 34 in Berlin Pankow-Niederschönenhausen, the building, along with the garden and tennis court, were completed in 1975. It was the location of the Australian Embassy in East Berlin until 1986. There were plans to tear down the former Australian Embassy in 2015, but the demolition was prevented when the district office of Pankow placed the building under landmark protection. This brought about a restructuring, during which the owner has allowed the interim use of the building as a location for artist studios. Atelierhaus Australische Botschaft (OST) was founded in April 2017 and comprises a group of more than 30 artists working in the fields of visual art, theater, performance, literature, music, photography and dance.

Club der polnischen Versager

Despite its easy-going name, the Polish Failures Club has a serious intention. It is dedicated to fiascos, to disappointments, in short to failure. Its members are convinced that failure is an integral part of life. Wherever there is success, there must also be let-downs, especially in a society that defines itself by success. There is nothing bad about failure. It is a part of every learning process, every successful result. Disappointments are a necessary part of life and there is no reason for Polish failures to deny, suppress or be silent about failure. Quite the opposite! Under certain conditions, recognizing that you are a failure can have a therapeutic effect. The Polish Failures Club is not a commercial club. All its members work on a volunteer basis. The Polish Failures Club finances itself from donations and membership fees. After all, as it so often says on our posters and flyers: “Financially sponsored by no one!”

Collegium Hungaricum Berlin

Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB) has been enriching Berlin’s international art and culture community for nearly a century and launched an expanded concept with a revised function in 2016. With a special focus on creative processes as well as an opening to a broader, more international audience, the CHB team has developed an interdisciplinary programming structure which is built upon five so-called “modes” (scenic – science – screen – sound – space), each with their independent brand character.
As such, CHB see itself not only as a forum for addressing current fluctuations within Hungary’s artistic communities or an internationally relevant oeuvre. It is different and it is much more: a place for dialog and encounters, a discursive platform that deals with the societal and cultural upheavals of our present as well as simultaneously a workshop and incubator for innovative ideas and a creative hub.

DAS WEITE THEATER

For 25 years, Weites Theater for puppets and humans has been representing a professional and large variety of puppet theater both at home and abroad. With its charming venue, Weites Theater, we offer young and old audiences alike the opportunity of attending high quality theatrical performances.
The theater is dedicated to integrating different forms of the performing arts. In addition to traditional forms of puppet theater, the performances often incorporate several different techniques. Live music also plays a vital role in many of the productions. This means that our productions follow unconventional routes to carrying out daring experiments: puppet theater may be our home, but it is not our only abode: our spectrum is, like our name, Weit, or broad. In determine genre, the definitive question is how a story can be best conveyed. Our schedule of programming is enhanced with guest performances from groups and theaters within the independent performing arts community, especially those of our partner Theater des Lachens (Frankfurt/Oder). Our company has performed in many theaters all over Germany as well as at festivals abroad.

Ehemaliges jüdisches Waisenhaus

Constructed between 1912 and 1913 and designed by the architect Alexander Beer, the building was intended originally to be both a home and a school for Jewish orphans: The 2nd Jewish Orphanage of the Berlin Jewish Community. In December 1942, this home and school was, however, shut down by the National-Socialist regime. After the war's end, the building was again reopened and reoccupied over the years by various institutions such as the Embassy of Poland and Cuba. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the building was again left to fall into disuse and disrepair. That is, until 1999, when it was acquired by the Dr. Walter and Margarete Cajewitz Foundation and subsequently restored. Today, the Former Jewish Orphanage of Pankow houses both the Janusz Korczack Library, as well as the comprehense school SchuleEins. The heritage building strives to be a place of meeting shared between generations, a place working to preserve both history and memory.

Hannah Höch purchased the property with house and coach house on Wildbahn 33 in Berlin-Heiligensee in 1939. She lived and worked there until her death in 1978. The most well-known German artist of classical modernism, she created a unique collage garden in addition to her visual work for almost 40 years. The entire grounds were provided landmark protection as an historic monument by the Berlin Landesdenkmalamt in the 1990s. In 2005, the artist Johannes Bauersachs acquired the estate with the help of family and friends with the well-accepted obligation to continue and maintain the house and garden in the memory and meaning of Hannah Höch.

Platzhaus: Festival-Dependance Prenzlauer Berg

Platzhaus is located both on the outskirts and right in the middle of Helmholtzplatz, a former public bathroom facility that has developed into a welcoming place within the neighborhood where people with low socio-economic potential can also experience social participation. This is a house whose contours were outlined in drawings from the last decade and whose architecture remains flexible in the sense of togetherness and discussion. Since the association Helmholzplatz e.V. first saw the light of day in 2002, WE have operated Platzhaus, located at Helmholtzplatz 0. Today, it reveals the traces of unusual ownership structures and very different existences marked by strongly contrasting living environments.

WE are and were human beings from these worlds who have voluntarily accompanied and carried this fragile project through the last wild times of the "development east to west" to the economic state of late capitalism. It is an opportunity for everyone who wants to be a part of things and has time to take a stance in support of peace, solidarity and utopia.

Radialsystem V

The concept of dialogue plays a key role at Radialsystem V: the combination of apparently opposed concepts leading to a result that exceeds the sum of its parts is reflected in the architecture of the building and its balanced synthesis of old and new elements, as well as the house's involvement in the interaction of culture and economy.
It is also mirrored in the artistic schedules of programming of the house, where early music interacts with contemporary dance, classical concerts are combined with new media and visual arts meet with live performance. Willing to take risks and to experiment without an elitist attitude, Radialsystem V develops and tests new artistic formats. The basic thought of the concept of dialogue is openness (as opposed to restriction): for new forms, unconventional ideas, an interdisciplinary approach, unexpected fusions, and surprising insights.
An integral part of the venue's concept is the dialogue between culture and business. Radialsystem V is now recognized as a first-class venue for receptions, symposiums and congresses – and this success is reflected in the constant stream of room bookings for political, commercial, science and media events of all kinds. With its spacious halls, panoramic studios, the wooden sun deck and the cobble stone terrae on the Spree with its own dock for boats, RADIALSYSTEM V boasts a range of outstanding spaces that make it the ideal location for conventions, gala events and media productions.

Ruine der Franziskaner Klosterkirche (Wiese davor)

Ideally, we will present Zwei Schwestern at the ruins of the Franciscan cloisters (constructed at the end of the 13th century) because it supports our subject of shame and also our work with the image of women in a historical context, which becomes exceptionally clear in a church environment. In addition, the ruins also present an essential contrast as we are outdoors and exposed to the world, allowing the production to take on an additional dimension. Our second option is the courtyard at Pfefferberg Theater. This will also allow us to juxtapose the subject of shame with the audience. We selected our performance venue with the thought of openly displaying a very personal feeling that usually leads to hiding.

Schaubude Berlin

As a Berlin venue for the theater of things, Schaubude Berlin has become a central platform of the genre and garnered international attention since it was founded in 1993. The program unites different aesthetic approaches to contemporary puppet, figure and object theater and presents the work of Berlin-based theater artists alongside national and international guest productions, especially during the international puppet and object theater festival Theater der Dinge. There is also a strong focus on supporting the next generation of artists, for instance in collaborations with the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art and with the special section of programming Junge Szene, or “young community”. In addition to presenting some 300 performances per season in the children’s and evening programs, as well as staging festivals, Schaubude Berlin offers a broad range of theater education activities and discursive formats to teach artistic processes. Beyond this, the theater also initiates numerous cross-genre encounters and thematic focuses. Schaubude Berlin was the recipient of the 2017 Theaterpreis des Bundes prize.

SO36

The venue of SO 36 at Heinrichplatz does not coincidentally bear the name of the old postal code for Kreuzberg; in this space rich in tradition, a vibrant present meets a compelling past. The hall offers space for newcomers, sounds beyond those of the charts and the mainstream, as well as events and shows by all kinds of projects. The SO 36 team is just as diverse as its events. People from various groups and with different backgrounds have started the attempt to build bridges. As an influential cultural institution, SO 36 is also relevant beyond the borders of Kreuzberg, and it is impossible to imagine Berlin night life without the venue on Oranienstraße as innovator and crowd magnet.

tak Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg

The TAK venues has existed for the last seven years and recently issued a call for a new concept. In response to this impulse, the artists and artist collectives kainkollektiv (Bochum), suite42 (Berlin), France-Elena Damian (Berlin) and Anna Koch/Moritz Pankok (tak e.V. Berlin/Mülheim) came together with the shared idea of establishing a collective management model for an independent theater led by several groups on an equal basis; tak Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg.
At the reopening in January 2018, all of the following plans and ideas for the founding of tak were still "under construction - im Aufbau" - a state of being that will be a guiding theme throughout the year 2018. This is a fact that we would like to use transparently and productively.

On the one hand, this idea follows the mutual focus regarding the content for the theater’s orientation on transnational and multilingual projects which take into consideration the topics and questions of globalized societies in the 21st century. Each of these artist groups/artists have been consistently developing and fulfilling a myriad of cross-border projects for many years between different parts of Germany (e.g. North-Rhine Westphalia, Berlin) Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Romania, Syria and the USA as well as with Roma artists with different backgrounds. A part of this process from the very beginning has also been the creation of partnerships and the artistic and political discussion with artists who live in Germany in exile, which will be developed further in the new tak.
On the other hand, the idea for this collaboration is based on the artistic and organizational search for a new and innovative form of collective management and aesthetic production methods. The reopening of tak constitutes a pilot project that relates to the growing public discussion between the institutional theaters and the independent performing arts community regarding the future of theater structures (in Germany). The search for new intersections between the communities in Germany's federal states has also played a large role in this discussion. In light of this, a part of the new collective management team of tak will be the group kainkollektiv from Bochum in order to create new alliances and utilize existing potentials between independent performing arts community across Germany.

Theater auf dem Holzmarkt25

Holzmarkt is not just a street in Berlin with a lively history. The name says it all and we see our future in it. Holzmarkt, literally “lumber market”, means the combination of nature, economy and culture. We open and create creative spaces to live and work. A lively neighborhood is to be created where the scars of the Berlin Wall between East and West Berrlin can still be seen that connects Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Mitte. No wall or other barrier blocks the view to the Spree. The Holzmarkt attracts, delights, inspires and brings together people from Berlin and all over the world. Here you can find peace and fun, work and entertainment that you can help to shape and enjoy. Sustainability and change are no contradiction for us. We create an interface between modern architecture and a lumber market in the literal sense of the word. New technologies and crafts cross-pollinate each other. Holzmarkt leaves room for new things and does not remain static. We want to create value, experiment and learn in a unique place worth living.

Vierte Welt Kollaborationen

Vierte Welt was founded in 2010 in Zentrum Kreuzberg upon the initiative of Lubricat. Vierte Welt is a space in which artists, specialists, activists and the audience can meet at eye level to reach understandings and achieve exchanges. Vierte Welt has developed into being an open space of possibility within which we assert, in opposition to the short-term exploitation pressure of the market, a situation of permanence and continuity in the artistic work. Far from the focus on a singular aesthetic event (project) and from being confined to one community, we work to change the perspective of the practice of artistic production and presentation in which we seek to think aesthetic and artistic/political positions anew.
